Bristol County Jail Roster
The Bristol County jail roster is managed by the Bristol County Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Paul Heroux, based in North Dartmouth. The facility serves a large area of southeastern Massachusetts including Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton, Attleboro, and more than 15 other communities. Inmate lookup may require a phone inquiry in some cases, and this page explains how to search the Bristol County roster, what data is available, how to reach the sheriff's office, and how to submit a formal records request through the office's public records process.
Bristol County Jail Roster Overview
Bristol County Sheriff's Office
The Bristol County Sheriff's Office main facility is at 400 Faunce Corner Road, North Dartmouth, MA 02747. Sheriff Paul Heroux leads the department. The main phone is (508) 995-6400 and the fax is (508) 995-1719. A separate civil process office operates at 421 Faunce Corner Road with its own line at (508) 992-6631. The Records Access Officer for public records requests is Michael C. Arnold, Esq. of the Legal Division.
Bristol County covers a broad stretch of southeastern Massachusetts. The county includes Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton, Attleboro, and more than 15 additional cities and towns. This makes it one of the more geographically spread-out county systems in the state. All arrests processed through the county end up at the North Dartmouth facility. Both pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates serving up to two and a half years are held here.
Staff can help with custody status, visiting schedules, and how to send funds to an inmate's account. If you need to confirm whether someone is currently held at the Bristol County facility, calling (508) 995-6400 and asking for the inmate information unit is a reliable option, especially for recent bookings that may not have fully updated online yet.
Visit the Bristol County Sheriff's Office main website to access department information, inmate lookup resources, and public records request forms.
The site covers facility details, programs, and how to reach each division within the department.
Bristol County Jail Roster Search
The Bristol County inmate lookup is available at bcso-ma.us/inmate-lookup. Online access may be limited depending on the system's current availability. If you cannot find someone through the online tool, calling (508) 995-6400 and asking for inmate information is the recommended next step. Phone searches can be done by name (first and last), date of birth for verification, or booking number.
Each result in the Bristol County jail roster includes: Full Name, Booking Date, Current Status, Facility Location, Charges, Bail Amount, Court Information, and Projected Release Date. The status field tells you whether someone is currently held as a pretrial detainee or is serving a sentence. Bail amounts are listed as set at booking and may change after a court hearing.
Because Bristol County serves such a large geographic area, the roster can include inmates from any of its many communities. Arrests from Fall River, New Bedford, and Taunton all process through the same facility. If you know where an arrest occurred, that context can help narrow your search. For very recent bookings, phone confirmation is often more reliable than the online tool.
Under M.G.L. c. 66, § 10, Bristol County booking records and roster data are public records. Anyone can access this information without a fee or a stated purpose.
Bristol County Jail Public Records Request
Not all records are available through the online search or by phone. For booking reports, incident reports, inmate rosters, classification records, visitor logs, and release records, you need to submit a formal public records request. The Records Access Officer for Bristol County is Michael C. Arnold, Esq. of the Legal Division at the main facility.
Submit your request by mail to: Bristol County Sheriff's Office, 400 Faunce Corner Road, North Dartmouth, MA 02747, Attention: Records Access Officer. You can also submit requests through the website at bcso-ma.us/public_records_requests.html, by phone at (508) 995-6400, or in person at the facility. Include the full name of the person whose records you need, relevant dates, and your contact information for a response.
The office has ten business days to respond under Massachusetts public records law. More complex requests involving older records or large volumes of documents may take longer, and the office may request an extension. Fees follow state guidelines for copies and staff time. Simple electronic requests are often fulfilled at little or no cost.
Review the public records request page on the Bristol County Sheriff's Office website for forms and instructions.
Using the official request form ensures your inquiry reaches the right department and is processed in order.
Contacting Bristol County Sheriff
The contact page for the Bristol County Sheriff's Office lists phone numbers, mailing addresses, and department-specific contacts for different types of inquiries. Knowing which line to call saves time when you need a fast answer about custody status or visiting hours.
The contact page also includes fax numbers and the civil process office line for those who need to serve legal documents.
For inmate information, call (508) 995-6400 and ask to be connected to the inmate information unit. For public records, direct your inquiry to the Legal Division or Records Access Officer. The civil process office at (508) 992-6631 handles a separate function and is not the right line for custody questions.
Note: If you are unsure which department to contact, calling the main line at (508) 995-6400 first is always a good starting point. Staff can route your call to the right person.
Bristol County Roster vs. State Custody
Bristol County only holds people serving terms of up to two and a half years or those awaiting trial. Anyone sentenced to a longer term leaves the county system and is transferred to state prison. Those inmates will no longer appear in the Bristol County jail roster. For state prisoners, use the Massachusetts DOC Inmate Search to find them through the Department of Correction database.
The two systems are separate. A search in the Bristol County roster will not show someone in state custody. If you do not know which system applies, start with the county search. If you get no result, try the DOC database next. Together, the two searches cover nearly everyone in custody in Massachusetts.
Court records for Bristol County cases are available through MassCourts. Case dockets, court dates, and case status are searchable there. The court system and the sheriff's office operate independently, so changes in a case may not immediately change custody status.
Victim notification rights under M.G.L. c. 258B apply to Bristol County as well. Victims have the right to be informed of custody changes and court hearings. Contact the Bristol County Sheriff's Office to ask about their notification process for victims seeking updates on an offender's status.
Massachusetts Public Records Rights
Massachusetts public records law under M.G.L. c. 66, § 10 gives any person the right to inspect or copy records held by a government agency. Bristol County jail rosters, booking logs, and custody records are generally public. Some information may be withheld under specific exemptions, such as records linked to active investigations or data that could put someone at risk.
You do not need to explain why you want records. No purpose is required. If a request is denied, the agency must say which exemption it is relying on. You can then appeal to the Secretary of State's office. The Massachusetts Public Records Portal walks through the appeal steps and provides forms.
County correctional facilities operate under M.G.L. c. 126, which sets the standards for how county jails are run and what records they must keep. This law applies to all 14 county sheriff departments in Massachusetts, including Bristol County.
